8 Reasons Why In-Person Teaching Is As Important As Ever

Thanks to the lifted COVID-19 restrictions around the world, it is now possible to once again immerse in physical lectures and classes regardless of where you choose to study.

Although online learning is convenient and has become the norm over the last couple of years, in-person learning is where you truly learn the most.

For starters, you’ll have fewer distractions when you’re having a lesson in an actual lecture theatre or classroom rather than on your laptop in your comfortable room! On top of that, there are other great benefits that come with in-person lessons.

Today, we explore the different reasons why in-person teaching is the superior way to learn and why you should opt for courses and universities that prioritize in-person teaching!

8 Benefits Of In-Person Teaching That You Must Know

1. Interact Directly With The Lecturer & Course mates

When you get to interact face-to-face with your peers, it creates opportunities for more organic discussions and exchange of ideas in class.

Apart from that, it is also much easier to directly ask questions or clarify doubts with a lecturer in person and get answers right away.

Although you can also virtually interact with your lecturer and course mates, there might be a lag in response time and conversations may not go as smoothly.

2. Develop Real-World Interaction & Presentation Skills

Being able to present well from behind a screen unfortunately doesn’t translate to achieving that same effect in person, in front of an audience.

After all, these crucial presentation skills can only be developed properly with practice. Each time you have real-world interactions and present in front of your lecturer and peers, you improve, gain confidence and overcome stage fright.

3. Concentrate Better Thanks To Lesser Distractions

As mentioned earlier, physically being in a lecture theatre or classroom eliminates distractions and you’re more likely to pay attention in class.

This is because such learning spaces are dedicated areas designed to facilitate your learning, usually with no background noise and the tools you need.

On the other hand, attending classes online from home can be comfortable, but potentially not as productive. From using separate browser tabs to surf the Internet to having to entertain pets or family members, distractions are aplenty.

4. Develop Better Group Project Management Skills

Group work is a key component of your studies. Hence, it helps to be able to physically meet your groupmates, have discussions and work together on projects.

While it may feel more convenient to meet virtually, not all group members might be present during these meetings, especially if they are multitasking or doing other things while leaving the meeting window open – as a result, it may not be as productive.

Also, in the event there are issues or conflicts, it could be solved or managed more effectively in person rather than online.

5. Gain A More Personalized Experience That Can’t Be Replicated

The experience you get in a physical classroom is something you can’t get online.

Besides simply having a shared physical learning space with your classmates, there are also face-to-face discussions and hands-on learning that can take place only in an in-person learning environment.

6. Join Interactive Discussion Groups & Tutorial Classes

Actively being part of physical class discussions ensure that you are on top of the content you’re learning and also prevents you from falling behind in class.

Unfortunately, there’s a higher chance of experiencing low class participation or not feeling motivated to speak in an online class as it wouldn’t be as engaging.

Also, the lecturer would have a harder time monitoring the entire class, especially if screens are turned off in class. Hence, he or she might not be able to pinpoint specifically if someone is not on track.

7. Participate In Immersive Learning Experiences

As some topics may require you to have hands-on experiences, for example working on a server or building a machine, it can be a much better experience in-person than online.

Besides that, you will have more chances to collaborate on special projects with your peers during these in-person classes and learn more together.

Through experiential learning, you’ll pick up the necessary skills and equip yourself with the knowledge to perform when you eventually move on to your internship and job.

8. Build Genuine Connection & Bonds That Lasts

The sense of community you get from an in-person class can never be replicated in an online learning environment. After all, personal connections and bonds can only be established naturally through face-to-face conversations and collaboration.

In contrast to that, students hardly get to interact with each other during and after online classes because once the lesson is over, there’s no physical space to hang around for chats or project discussions.

By having in-person interactions with classmates that later turn into friends, there’s no doubt that genuine bonds will be fostered and lifelong friendships formed.
