De Montfort University (DMU) is a modern higher education institution based in Leicester, in the midlands of the UK. It is a campus university situated on the outskirts of the city centre, making it one of the few universities in the UK to offer the best of both worlds.

Students can choose from over 100 undergraduate qualifications at DMU, across a wide range of subjects. Postgraduate qualifications are also available. Whether students are looking to break new ground with creative courses or learn from the experts in the worlds of business, engineering or health, there are excellent options available.

The quality of these qualifications is widely renowned. DMU is a 5-star ‘excellent' rated university (QS rankings) offering a modern approach to learning. Students will achieve more, enjoy a better balance between study and leisure, and be happier during their time at DMU.

This is helped by the extensive support services offered by the university. Students can get help with any problems affecting them, whether they are wellbeing-related, financial or academic. There is also dedicated support for international students, helping them to feel comfortable while learning in the UK.

What's new

What's new

There is always something new and exciting taking place at DMU, and prospective students need only visit the news pages of the university's website to see exciting stories about student achievements, new research projects, funding opportunities and more.

The university continues to invest in its facilities to ensure that students always have contemporary learning spaces, utilising the same equipment and software that students will use when moving forward with their career.

This can involve new buildings such as the VJ Patel Building which houses the Arts Design and Humanities faculty at a cost of £58million GBP, but often includes minor improvements too – such as the new sustainable heating sources planned for the Leicester Media School to help make DMU more eco-friendly. This is just one example of how DMU is constantly evolving to meet the needs of a changing world.

Learning spaces are renovated on a regular basis to maintain the high standards across campus. The campus also boasts of impressive libraries, with the Kimberlin Library open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The university has also been recognised as a top-20 university for its employability initiatives, with recognition for the work done to help students transition into their future careers.

Teaching quality

Teaching quality

De Montfort University is highly regarded for the quality of its teaching. Students can expect to learn in contemporary facilities, working with expert faculty who have extensive experience within their subject field and as educators – not just knowing the topic inside-out, but knowing how to best present that information to students too.

The university has recently switched to a new approach to learning, called Education 2030, which is a block-learning format. Students will study fewer modules at any one time, with the aim being that they can enjoy a more focused learning style, receive feedback faster, and benefit from a better study/life balance at the same time while retaining knowledge in the process.

The university is rated by QS – an internationally-recognised higher education evaluator – as a 5-star ‘excellent' institution. Only 15 other universities in the UK, and 100 around the world, have also received this accolade in recognition of their quality, making DMU part of a prestigious list.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

The entry requirements for study at DMU can vary by course, but students can find the typical entry requirements needed for undergraduate and postgraduate study on the university's website. The requirements are broken down by country so that students can see exactly what is needed based on their own education system.

Students who are close to meeting the minimum requirements but fall just short are encouraged to contact the university. There may still be the opportunity for students to apply, with the option of taking on an initial shorter course before progressing onto the main undergraduate qualification.

All courses at DMU are taught and assessed in English, so students will have to meet minimum standards for the language if they are from a non-native speaking country by providing a certificate of their score. The IELTS scores required vary from 6.0 to 7.5 depending on the subject– equivalent test scores from other organisations will also be accepted. DMU holds pre-sessional English courses through the summer. They're suitable for students who would like to brush up on their language, while those who have not sat the IELTS test can make use of a free English Language Date Test.
