University ranks 74 in the world for sustainability

The University of Newcastle's commitment to sustainability has been placed in the spotlight, with the university ranked number 74 in the world in the 2024 QS Sustainability Rankings.

The results are a marked improvement upon the rankings in 2023, representing an upward leap by 15 places. The rankings are a useful tool for universities to globally to evaluate their contributions towards solving pressing global challenges through teaching, research, engagement and operations.

Read what Professor Vinu, a nanotechnologist investigating new ways to capture carbon dioxide and either store it or convert it into low-carbon fuels and chemicals, had to say about this improvement in the rankings:

''Whether we are leading research that creates a more sustainable future or educating the next generation of students in renewable practices, we are proud to be a global sustainability leader and will continue to strive for improvement.''

''We are quite excited to be actively engaged in the development of nanotechnological solutions, aiming to provide fresh avenues of hope for addressing challenges like global warming, fostering a healthier environment, and promoting a sustainable future.''

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Alex Zelinsky had this to say:

''We embed sustainability principles in our research, teaching and the facilities we provide. Sustainability is a core value of our University and our results in rankings like these demonstrated our contribution to solving the most pressing problems facing the world today.''

The University of Newcastle's Q Building was awarded a 6 Star Green Star ‘Design and As Built' certified rating – the highest available rating by the Green Building Council of Australia.

The University of Newcastle, Australia is comprised of three colleges:

College of Engineering, Science and Environment 

The college focuses on subjects in the fields of engineering, science and the environment. The college aims to equip students with the skills necessary to develop innovative solutions that have a positive impact on society. Industry practice is actively incorporated into the curricula of the college and programs covered include environmental science, development studies, architecture, data science, maths, and psychology. There are five schools in the college:

  • School of Architecture and Built Environment 
  • School of Engineering 
  • School of Environmental and Life Sciences 
  • School of Information and Physical Sciences
  • School of Psychological Sciences

College of Health, Medicine and Wellbeing

The college looks to develop students into excellent healthcare professionals and researchers who can make significant contributions to their respective fields. College of Human and Social Futures

Undergraduate and Postgraduate Applicants

Campuses

Newcastle City

NUspace is an AUD 95 million education precinct in Newcastle's CBD, utilising the latest in innovation as well as technology in both teaching and learning to provide a world-class student experience.

At Honeysuckle, Q Building is home to state-of-the-art facilities for use by students at the School of Creative Industries (SOCI). The Integrated Innovation Network (I2N) Hub strengthens the university's presence in the Newcastle CBD.

Callaghan (Newcastle)

University of Newcastle, Australia's main campus at Callaghan is well-connected to industry and regional employers, such as the John Hunter Hospital and Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI). The campus also serves as the central hub for humanities education social science science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine (STEMM) nursing and health.

Ourimbah and Gosford (Central Coast)

The Ourimbah campus offers students academic programs in business, education, humanities and social science, oral health therapy, podiatry and nursing and the sciences. The university's Central Coast Clinical School is a leading health, medicine and wellbeing teaching facility.

Sydney (City)

The Sydney campus offers world-class facilities and a range of ELICOS English Language programs and postgraduate programs, including Business administration, information technology and professional accounting.

Singapore (Downtown Core)

The Singapore campus is located in the CBD of one amongst Asia's best entrepreneurial and educational hubs. Programs are offered in business, communications, commerce, construction management, engineering, environmental and occupational health and safety and information technology.

Research

The university's researchers benefit from its world-class facilities and flagship research institutes consisting of the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI), Newcastle Institute for Energy and Resources (NIER), and more than 15 Priority Research Centres.

Scholarships & funding

The University of Newcastle offers a significantly lower cost of living than most major cities in the country. Additionally, the University of Newcastle is proud to offer students both affordable tuition fees alongside competitive scholarships to support students' studies. Scholarships are valued up to AUD 48,000 depending on the length of study, chosen degree and citizenship.  

These scholarships can greatly reduce the cost of tuition, making the University of Newcastle one of the more affordable options to study in Australia.

The university has four scholarships available for international students:
