Ranked in the top 130 global universities in the 2024 QS World University Rankings, Macquarie University provides transformative and practical learning experiences to its students to help them better the world around them.

Located in the heart of Sydney, the university has 3,000 teaching staff who welcome more than 45,000 students from 119 countries. Macquarie offers more than 200 degrees across multiple disciplines, including the largest range of one-year master's degrees in Australia. The university also offers a variety of double degrees, so students can combine interests and diversify career prospects.

The university provides ground-breaking innovation through industry partnerships and pioneering research. Many of its degrees are created in collaboration with industry partners and accredited by professional associations.

In recent years, the university has invested more than AUD 1 billion in its world-class, 126-hectare, green campus. It is equipped with advanced digital facilities, extensive support services, as well as being the only Australian university with an on-campus private hospital and train station.

AASCB Accreditation

Macquarie Business School has been accorded the distinguished AACSB International accreditation. AACSB is the oldest-serving accreditation worldwide body for business schools. It recognises institutions who demonstrate excellence in a variety of areas, including teaching, research, curriculum development and student learning.

Research partnership with Tata Consultancy Services

Macquarie University has announced a new research agreement with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS). This partnership will provide students with unique opportunities to gain valuable real-world experience in the areas of artificial intelligence (AI) within the financial services sector.

The partnership will create future opportunities for Macquarie students and provide access to the Tata Global Internship Programme (TGIP), where students develop critical business skills while working on real global projects. On these internships, students learn how Tata manages operations in its companies, across a wide range of industries. As part of the agreement, Macquarie and TCS will also offer research scholarships to postgraduate students.

Macquarie Law School

The university has completed the construction of a state-of-the-art Law School on campus, which facilitates collaboration between students and industry professionals. The school functions as a conduit to forge partnerships that not only support ongoing projects but also generate additional revenue through avenues such as sponsorships, endowed chairs, scholarships and philanthropic contributions.

Physics, Astronomy and Engineering (PAE) Building

The plan for the Physics, Astronomy and Engineering (PAE) building spans over 3,000 sqm across six stories. This will include a 2,718 sqm astronomy centre constructed in collaboration with Australian Astronomical Optics, which would place Macquarie University at the forefront of astronomical education and research. The building is due to be completed by the second quarter of 2025.

Macquarie University has performed strongly in the latest QS 2024 Subject Rankings, with 17 subjects ranked in the top 150 internationally. Three subjects were among the global top 50: Philosophy and Linguistics retained positions in the top 50, joined for the first time by Data Science and Artificial Intelligence.

Students can also choose from a wide range of double degrees, allowing them to combine their interests and diversify career prospects.

Undergraduate

The university offers single and double bachelor's degrees. When studying a single bachelor's degree, students can specialise in one or two majors within their chosen area of study, while still accessing flexible elective units to explore other interests. Single degrees are ideal for students with a strong interest in one area or a specific career goal.

A double bachelor's degree involves studying two complementary or completely different degrees. A double degree can help students increase their career flexibility and lead to greater employment prospects.

Postgraduate

Macquarie offers the largest range of one-year master's degrees in Australia, helping students to advance their knowledge and career prospects.

The university also offers a wide range of others postgraduate programmes. This includes English pathways, executive training, study tour and study abroad programmes, double masters, Master of Research and PhDs.

Depending on prior academic qualifications, work experience or other recognised prior learning, students may be eligible for a one-year admission point into their chosen master's degree. This enables them to fast track their studies, saving time and money. Double master students can also complete two master's degrees within two years.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

Undergraduate programs

International applicants applying to undergraduate programs at Macquarie need to have completed at least one of the following academic qualifications:

  • A recognised senior secondary school qualification or university entrance examination, such as the New South Wales Higher School Certificate or an equivalent Australian or overseas high school qualification.
  • A recognised university foundation course
  • A recognised two or three-year diploma, advanced diploma or associate degree
  • At least one year of a university degree from a recognised institution
  • Evidence of English language proficiency. Most undergraduate courses require Competent English equivalent to an overall Academic IELTS of 6.5.

Masters (by coursework)

Applicants will usually need a bachelor's degree from a recognised institution considered equivalent to an Australian bachelor's degree, which roughly amounts to Level 7 on the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF).

Some courses also require applicants to have previous study or work experience in a related area, a higher-level qualification such as an Honours Bachelor (AQF Level 8), or a specific Weight Average Mark (WAM) requirement.

As part of the required English proficiency, most postgraduate courses require Competent English equivalent to an overall Academic IELTS of 6.5.

Depending on applicants' prior qualifications, work experience, or other recognised prior learning, they may also be eligible for shorter admission points for master's courses. Ranging between 12-18 months, this enables students to fast track their study and save on time and money.

Master's (by research)

To apply for a research master or PhD programme, applicants need to demonstrate research experience in their previous studies.

Facilities

Macquarie has some of the most exceptional university facilities in Australia. The institution has invested more than AUD 1 billion in a wide variety of facilities and services, providing students with a convenient and engaging campus environment.

Accommodation

The university has accommodation facilities located both on and off campus. Students can choose from several accommodation styles, helping to balance academic and social activities in a supportive and vibrant community.
Finance Decision Lab 

This is an immersive learning and research space that combines world-class financial and business analytics with real-time market data to demonstrate the impact of financial decisions.

Library

The university's library holds more than 1.8 million academic and research records. It has enough study spaces for more than 3,000 students, including dedicated areas for postgraduates.

A centrally located learning and research facility, it also boasts a green roof and exhibition space. It also houses the first automated book storage and retrieval system in Australia.

Macquarie University Hospital

This is the first not-for-profit teaching hospital on an Australian university campus.

As well as providing a practical learning environment, the hospital also connects students with expert researchers and industry partners. Its interdisciplinary projects help to improve the health of patients and the local community.

Macquarie University Incubator

This award-winning facility develops entrepreneurship and innovation on campus. With educational programs and networking initiatives, students, staff and researchers can turn their business ideas into a reality.

Metro station

Macquarie is the only Australian university with an on-campus train station. It provides a driverless, convenient and safe public transport to the Sydney city centre and surrounding suburbs for students and staff.

Scholarships & funding

Macquarie offers generous scholarships for international students in Australia. The university awards over AUD 6 million in scholarships and grants each year to students from diverse backgrounds and nationalities. Some of the biggest scholarship options include:

Country Specific Scholarship

The university offers a wide range of tuition fee waiver scholarships for international students from priority markets. Ranging from AUD 5,000 up to AUD 10,000 per year, scholarships are applied towards tuition fees for the duration of the program of study.

Government and Partner Scholarships

Macquarie is an approved provider for many international government and academic institution scholarship programs. This includes recipients of the Australia Awards program, which is funded by the Australian government.

Vice-Chancellor's International Scholarships

Macquarie's Vice-Chancellor's International Scholarship recognises academic excellence for international students. This scholarship awards up to AUD 10,000 towards the program's tuition fee.
