6 dating tips every university student should know

There's really no one-size-fits-all experience to follow when it comes to dating at university. They are, however, one of the best times in your life to explore, experiment and grow. No matter if you are looking to date casually or are considering to get into a serious relationship, I can offer some useful advice to help you with this decision.

1. Do not disconnect from the world the moment you start dating someone

While there is nothing wrong with starting a committed relationship, dating someone often comes at the expense of having quality time with friends and family. It is important that we learn to balance our time as there are so many things for us to enjoy while at university!

You could miss out on a lot if you decide to settle down early on. It is important to still keep in touch with friends and family who love you even when you are in a relationship.

2. Be in a relationship that makes you happy

University is a time in our lives where we can change hugely as a person over a few months. This can also lead some couples growing into a different people. A tip to keep in mind is to be open to ideas that can be uncomfortable to talk about.

Being honest about your own thoughts works best for a long lasting relationship and never waste your time dating someone who makes you feel uncomfortable and unhappy.

3. It is perfectly fine not to stick with your date 24/7

Remember we are all separate people who deserve to live two separate and fulfilling lives. A mature, stable relationship allows growth and enjoyment in one’s lives. If one partner is being too clingy, it will often work out being an unhealthy relationship and will end up suffocating the other. My advice here is to allow some time for your personal growth and enjoy social life at university while dating!

4. The end of a relationship is not the end of your love life

It is normal to feel upset when your relationships fail. Spend some time on movies and sad songs or even sleep as long as you want! I suggest viewing failure as an experience and learn to forgive as this can help you feel free and to truly get over a failed relationship. Rushing into a new relationship to make your ex jealous will not work.

5. Make sure that you love yourself before getting in a relationship

University is a great time to practice self-love. Do not forget to fall in love with yourself first in any circumstances. Remember, you do not need someone to like you to make yourself feel good.

6. You don't have to date at all if you are not into anyone

Unless you find yourself actually liking that person and you’re looking to get into a relationship, you do not need to force yourself into one! I promise dating is not something that you must check off your bucket list at university.

Dating can help you learn how to love and compromise, balance school with relationship and be honest and open with thoughts which I think is a great experience to look back on in your future lives.

However, if you have not been in a relationship before, do not rush into one. Go embrace your singleness and let milestones happen naturally.
